Holiday safety tips with baby

Shiny decorations, new toys, and Christmas movies, oh my! The holiday season is undoubtedly a memorable and exciting time for the entire family! As you celebrate all the moments and traditions that make this time of year unforgettable, don’t forget to keep these safety tips in mind:

Ensure your tree is in a safe spot

Whether you prefer a live or artificial tree make sure it is clear of all room exits and is as far away from fireplaces, radiators, and portable space heaters as possible. Be sure to double check that your tree stand has been stabilized and that there is no chance it could fall over.

Hang decorations out of your little one’s reach

Little people with tiny hands and inquiring minds tend to explore anything that is within their reach. You can help combat this safety hazard by placing your more delicate decor higher on the tree or opting to use kid-friendly soft or felt decorations in your decor design this year.

Ensure toys are age appropriate

Aside from making sure your gifts are sensitive to the developmental stage of your little one, you also want to make sure to check all toys for button batteries to ensure they cannot be easily removed and swallowed by your little one. Additionally, if gifting items like bikes or scooters, be sure to also gift the necessary safety accessories like helmets and pads to reduce serious injury while your little one enjoys their new toy.

Be conscious of what gifts are placed under the tree

Be careful not to place dangerous materials or substances like glass bottles of perfume or cologne under the tree as they are toxic if ingested. Consider placing them in stockings that your curious one cannot reach or waiting until it's time to open gifts to present those items to your friend or family member.

Be careful where you place your favorite holiday drink

Take special care not to leave hot liquids and foods on the edge of counters or tables to prevent accidental spills and/or burns.

Be extra cautious during outings with your little one

With the increase in hustle and bustle and social engagements this time of year, it can be easy to find yourself temporarily separated from your child. Setting rules and boundaries before outings that your little one must always be able to see you and that you must always be able to see them can go a long way in preventing separation during this hectic season.

As this list of tips is not exhaustive of all the potential hazards that pop up around this time of year, the name of the game around this time of year is increased supervision. Following these holiday safety tips can be all you need to help prevent illness or injury and free you to enjoy creating new memories with your children.
