These bedding choices will help your baby sleep better
As soon as you become a parent, it is a natural feeling to want to provide the healthiest environment for your baby.
We start to think a little bit harder about the types of products and foods we are buying and whether they contain quality and safe ingredients.
It is no secret that harsh chemicals shouldn’t be used around children and unhealthy/processed foods should be avoided as often as possible, but one of the areas that is often over-looked when it comes to the products we use for our babies is bedding and clothing.
I’ll never forget when our one-year old son started to develop bumps on his face and it took us way too long to figure out why it was happening. We eliminated major food groups, switched laundry detergents, and even got him tested for allergies.
But we never stopped to think that it might be the type of sheets we were using in his crib, until a fellow mama shared about a similar experience with her young child.
Since then, we’ve become a bit more educated on the importance of using organic bedding and the reasons why it should be just as important as the foods you’re giving your children.
Five reasons you should switch to organic bedding
1. It is healthier for your child
This seems like a no-brainer when it comes to organic foods and household products, but does organic bedding really make a difference? The short answer is yes, but let me explain why.
In traditional cotton products there are certain fertilizers and pesticides that are used in the growing process which are toxic. Formaldehyde specifically, which is found in many bedding products, is a skin irritant and can cause many other health issues such as asthma. 100% organic cotton is always the better choice because it doesn’t contain these harsh chemicals and is best for your baby’s sensitive skin and overall health.
2) It will help your baby sleep better
Your baby spends a lot of her day sleeping, especially as a newborn. If the material in your baby’s sheets or blankets is causing any type of skin rash or irritant to your baby’s breathing or anything else, that is sure to affect how well she sleeps. Not to mention higher quality cotton and other materials feel much more soft and comfortable, and who doesn’t want their sleep environment to feel soft and comfy?
3) Most organic-labeled bedding products have to be GOTS certified.
The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is recognized as the world's leading processing standard for textiles made from organic fibers. It defines high-level environmental criteria along the entire organic textiles supply chain and requires compliance with social criteria as well (www.global-standard.org). Just as foods have to go through a process to be labeled as certified organic, so do organic textile products.
So, you can rest assured when you see this label as you seek out the best products for your baby.
4) Organic bedding can help regulate body temperature
Have you ever noticed your baby wakes up drenched or maybe you yourself have had this experience? While this can be caused by many other things (such as the room temperature being set too high), it can also be caused by the types of sheets you are sleeping in.
Certain products, such as bamboo bedding, actually help keep you cool in the summer and warm in the winter by enhancing moisture evaporation and the breathable fibers help to prevent over-heating.
5) It is more sustainable and better for the environment
Harsh chemicals can cause synthetic cotton fibers to break down after washes, but organic cotton will last much longer. Additionally, because synthetic cotton and other materials are made using chemicals, that means those toxins are being absorbed in our soil and water. By choosing organic bedding, you are helping to promote safer conditions and smaller farms.
As a mama myself, I know it can seem overwhelming to try and make the switch from synthetic products to organic, but it can feel a little more manageable by taking a gradual approach.
You have likely taken an inventory of your pantry and your cleaning supplies, so your sheets and bedding don’t have to be any different.
