White Noise Machines We Love

It’s no secret that the sleep consultants here at My Sweet Sleeper love white noise machines.

We tend to think we need to tiptoe around our babies, but while the womb provides some padding, your little one heard a large amount of blended noises in utero. Ambient noise is already very familiar to your baby. This is where white noise comes into your sleep plan tool box.

What exactly is white noise?

White noise is a mix of sounds and frequencies that when played at once creates a soothing hum capable of blocking out distracting sounds. Some mothers have relied on sounds like a humidifier, quiet vacuum, tracks of running water or rain, or even the latest ASMR trends.

Is a white noise machine right for my baby?

A white noise machine replicates the blur of sounds a baby hears in the womb, providing familiar comfort. Depending on your baby’s sleep style, they may fall asleep quicker or stay asleep longer with consistency in their environment’s sound. After all, we can’t always control what sounds are around us. Construction, roadwork, deliveries, neighborhood dogs, weather – the list of potential nap time disruptors goes on and on! Every baby is different and will react to different sleep environments. If your baby tends to show sleep cues when exposed to certain soothing or steady sounds, this might be a sign that a white noise machine is perfect for your nap time routine.

One easily portable machine that provides comfort, helps to mask sounds that can startle your baby awake, and help them sleep longer? Yes!

Here are five of our favorite white noise machines:

1. Hatch - One thing we LOVE about our hatch is the app control! You can manage the sound settings without having to go into your baby’s room. This white noise machine for baby also has a dim night light you can use during feedings and diaper changes.

2. Baby Dream Machine - The baby dream machine is a cute sound machine shaped like a bear and doubles as a cool mist humidifier! The Baby Dream Machine also has red light therapy. You have the option to use regular white night light with brightness control or you can switch over to red light therapy. Baby Dream Machine has full explanations of red light therapy on their website as well to help you understand all the features and benefits of their product. We absolutely love that it’s a night light, white noise machine and humidifier in one product. Talk about travel friendly!

3. Homedics White Noise Sound Machine- A trusted and well known brand, the Homedics white noise machine is also a great option for travel due to its compact size and shape, and offers up to six different soothing sounds. The SleepSpa line provides budget friendly options for both baby and parent. Once your little one no longer needs the machine to sleep it’s perfect for your office (or your naps)!

4. Dohm from YogaSleep - Dohm, invented in 1962, is the original white noise machine. This machine has controls for tone and volume allowing you a customizable experience. The compact Dohm is probably our favorite option for traveling and it comes in so many fun colors, sizes, and shapes!

Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

5. White noise apps -  The awesome thing about a white noise app is most of them are free and you can use them on the go. If you’re not sure a white noise machine is right for you or your baby, try an ap! You can find the sound, tone, and style of noise that suits your baby before committing to an actual machine. A white noise ap might not be the right option for everyone unless you have a smart tv in the nursery, a spare tablet, or leave your phone in your baby’s room.
